The Next Generation Energy Storage Grants provides Australian Capital Territory households and businesses with a discount to install a battery storage unit with a rooftop solar PV system. Your battery is charged with free solar energy from your rooftop. You can use this energy when you need to, even when the sun isn’t shining.
The discount only applies to the battery unit. Batteries must be installed in conjunction with a new or existing solar PV system. As a guide, a discount of between $2,000 and $4,000 should apply, depending on the size of the system.
Through this program, the ACT Government is subsidising battery storage in around 5,000 Canberra homes and businesses. Eight battery storage and solar PV companies have been selected to do the installations through a competitive process.
To be eligible for the discount you must:
own or rent a property located in the Australian Capital Territory
have a suitable location for the battery.
You can reduce your energy bills by using your battery at peak times (when it’s most expensive to buy electricity from the grid). An added bonus of some systems is that your battery can provide backup power during an outage.
As well as benefiting individual households, rolling out battery storage benefits the ACT’s energy grid, reduces peak demand on the energy network and saves the Australian Capital Territory money.
