The Wood Heater Replacement Program can help Australian Capital Territory residents replace controlled combustion heaters (wood heaters) or open fireplaces with a new mains-supplied gas heater or a new reverse cycle electric system.
The program helps you reduce winter air pollution from wood smoke by offering rebates of up to $1,100 to install a mains-supplied gas heater or a new reverse cycle electric system. Please note the inclusion of reverse cycle electric systems is a trial so there are limited rebates available.
These rebates are funded through ActewAGL.
To be eligible for this subsidy, you must:
be an ACT ratepayer and the property must be zoned as 'residential'
be replacing a wood heater or an open fireplace with:
a new mains-supplied gas ducted system, or
a new mains-supplied fixed flued gas heater, or
upgraded ducted gas heater (5 or 6 star energy rating), or
a new ducted reverse cycle system, or
a new reverse cycle split system (minimum 3 star energy rating), or
upgraded reverse cycle systems.
only apply for one rebate per property (owners of rental properties may also apply)
have a replacement gas heating system located in the same area as the old wood heater or fireplace
not have replaced, or be in the process of replacing your wood heater or fireplace before submitting an application
have an officer from the actsmart household team visit your home to view your existing wood heater or open fireplace.
All completed claims must be lodged with the ACT Government within 3 months from the date your application was approved.
Homeowners and landlords are eligible for this program. Owners of rental properties may apply provided the tenant and the property owner agree and both sign the application form.
A number of other conditions apply. Check your eligibility (PDF 136 KB) on the ACT Government website.
