The actsmart Wood Heater Replacement Program can help Australian Capital Territory residents replace controlled combustion heaters (wood heaters) or open fireplaces with a new energy-efficient electric reverse cycle heat system.
The program helps you reduce winter air pollution from wood smoke by offering rebates of up to $1,000 to install a new energy-efficient electric reverse cycle heat system.
The program will only subsidise the replacement of wood heater or open fireplaces with new energy-efficient electric reverse cycle heat systems.
To be eligible for this subsidy, you must:
be an Australian Capital Territory ratepayer and the property must be zoned as 'residential'
be replacing a wood heater or an open fireplace with:
a new ducted electric reverse cycle system, or
a new electric reverse cycle split system (minimum 3 star energy rating), or
upgraded electric reverse cycle system (minimum 3 star energy rating).
only apply for one rebate per property (owners of rental properties may also apply)
not have replaced, or be in the process of replacing your wood heater or fireplace before submitting an application
the wood heater or open fireplace must be located in the primary living space such as lounge rooms and living areas
have an officer from the actsmart household team visit your home to view your existing wood heater or open fireplace.
All completed claims must be lodged with the ACT Government within 3 months from the date your application was approved.
Homeowners and landlords are eligible for this program. Owners of rental properties may apply provided the tenant and the property owner agree and both sign the application form.
A number of other conditions apply. Check your eligibility on the ACT Government website.
The actsmart Wood Heater Replacement Program provides:
$1,000 for the installation of a new electric ducted reverse cycle system
$500 for the installation of a new electric reverse cycle split system (minimum 3 star rating)
$500 to upgrade an existing older less efficient electric reverse cycle system with a new more efficient model (minimum 3 star rating).
A $100 rebate is also available to households for removing and disposing of a wood heater or permanently disabling an open fireplace. The $100 rebate is available even if you don't qualify for a new or upgraded reverse cycle system.
Non-living areas such as garages, sheds and workshops are excluded from the rebate.
There is a limited amount of rebates available each year.
